Lots of variables here. Size of the youth, cold, wet, how far you are going to walk? And you sure don't want them miserable. My son started going with me when he was six, but we were archery hunting elk. Now this was over 40 years ago and we went to the army surplus store. Not every thing fit perfect but he seemed so excited about getting to go that he didn't seem to mind. There were several times I packed his gear and even a few I packed him but he was always such good company I didn't mind one little bit, just wish I could go back and do it all over again.
