Hey guys. I've got a Remington XP-100 with a trigger that's giving me fits. It's chambered in 260 Remington and is one of my main deer hunting handguns. To complicate things, the modern gun deer season in AR where I hunt opens up in only 4 days. I believe the issue is with the trigger linkage rubbing on the stock, but I'm seeking your advice.
I bought the gun used about 10 years ago. 8 years ago I put it in a new McMillan stock I got using the old Specialty Pistols website group purchase. The metal bedding block for the rear action screw was not drilled and tapped at the factory. The gun shot 1-1 1/2" groups at 100 yards and it killed a number of deer so I left it alone. Eventually it annoyed me how the barrel wasn't real snug in the stock. During the off season, I asked a local gunsmith to drill and tap the rear bedding block, although I asked him to drill it in from the bottom of the stock up into the action like had been done on a used XP bought on the SP site. When I picked it up a few weeks ago, I noticed the the rear action screw went into bedding block from the top, the usual approach. He said there'd not been enough surface in the action to attach the rear action screw from the bottom like I expected. Although the barrel and action were now tight and it shot like usual, the trigger seemed worse that I remembered, dropping at 7-8 1/2#. With the action out of the stock, the trigger broke at 2#. I left the adjustment screw unaltered. I played with different amounts of torque on the action screws and found the weight needed to drop the hammer went up as I increased torque on the screws. I put some lipstick on the bottom of the trigger linkage. There was lipstick on the front of the stock, where the front action screw attaches, but not at the rear action screw. Unfortunately, I also saw 5 cracks in the stock at the front action screw.
I e-mailed McMillan last night and they called me this AM. She said as long as accuracy was ok, I could use the gun for deer season and send it to them after the season is over. I'd pay shipping, but they have a lifetime warranty. I didn't realize it, but there's a metal bedding block in the front action screw area that's covered by the synthetic stock. I've played with different amounts of torques on the front and rear action screws. With both screws backed off 1/4 turn from snug, the trigger drops at 4 1/2-5#. I'm going to leave it as is and shoot it Saturday PM. I'm hunting with an XP in 284 in the AM.
I think the trigger linkage is rubbing on the stock, increasing the trigger pull. My questions: What would reduce the trigger pull?
Polish the bottom surface of the trigger linkage.
Polish the areas of the stock I think are rubbing on the trigger linkage.
Use shorter or longer front/rear action screws.
I'm open to whatever suggestions you might have.
