you would have as the first attempt and solution? no problem if so, just seems a bit risky

I would have liked to see them both darted and examined for injury, but someone made the decision not to. This was a quick fix and did work without injury to the deer or officers.

That's what I'd have done. There's risk with darting and tranquilizing also. More so with animals that are already physically stressed.

I think a .410 or 20 gauge would have worked better. However, you would need to get closer......ie point blank!
