win model 70 reload problem.

I have been reloading for a friend's custom 375 H&H Magnum which is built on a Winchester Model 70 action. I have been having problems feeding empty cases into the chamber single shot style. I have been trying to chamber the fully resized empty cases before I reload them because I have had few problems feeding the loaded rounds as well. If I just lay the empty case on top of the magazine follower, the bolt will not fully close on the empty case about a third of the time. If I push the case down into the magazine first, they all feed fine. Has any one came across any issue like this please?

I suspect as @philipbrousseau does, that it is a "controlled round feed" action. It should still close, but may be difficult. Does the same thing happen with factory ammo? Loaded ammo? Or is it only when attempting to feed empty cases? Does it do so with other brands of brass? Has it been rebarreled? If so, is there enough room for the claw extractor to "snap over" the case rim? Is the extractor properly positioned? Did this just start happening?

Just trying to assist in determining a solution.

Not to be redundant, but it is probably a controlled round feed. Does it have a wide Mauser style claw extractor?

Another vote for a "controlled round feed" issue. I have had the same thing happen.

They are different than a push round feed, which you can drop a round into the action and easily close the bolt.

The controlled round feed takes a lot more ugga duggas to close on a round dropped in the action, but feed and close like butter when picking them out of the mag box. The case head slides up into the slot in the bottom of the bolt face when coming out of the mag.

Is it possible that the area just in front of the belt isn't getting sized? I had a 7 RM that had this issue. If that isn't the problem, then controlled round feed would be my second guess.

unless you modify the claw you'll have a hell of a time trying to snap it over the case rim while loading. it's meant to be held by the claw as it goes into the chamber not be pushed by the front of the claw. hence control round feed vs push feed. pull the bolt out, put the sized case onto the bolt face, if it was built right the claw should hold the case on the bolt and you can reinsert the bolt with the the case into the action to check fit.

There are 2 styles of CRF actions.
Winchester Model 70 is a direct copy of the original Mauser, in which the round has to come from the bottom, read magazine, to slide under the rim of the claw extractor.
It is not designed, or easily able to slip over the rim of the case. It will damage your brass rims making them feed worse.
Now some CRF actions have a notched claw, like Ruger, where the case can be push fed and the claw slips over the round on bolt turn down.
This modification on a Win Model 70 does not always work, so I advise not doing it.
The reason is, even though Model 70's have a relief cut for the extractor, there is little room for the claw to move sideways enough to go over the rim of the case.
I have seen broken claws from continuous use of this.
