OK I am starting to try to get a new load for a 338-378 weatherby magnum, worked up to 103 grns of H-1000 with the 300 smk, it was chrono at 2872 fps out of 5 shots, I was kinda wanting 2900 so I bumped it up to 103.5 and the speed was actually about 50fps slower with the 3rd one sticking my bolt, can this be because of the 26 inch barrel and wont get any more speed? I hope everyone gives some feedback. Was thinking about trying some RL25 to see if I get different results

I don't have any experience with the big Weatherbys but this may help, H-1000 is a favorite in the 338 Edge & RUM, I would say it's a bit on the fast side for a case the size of the Weatherby. I would definitely try a slower powder like Retumbo, US 869 or maybe even some of the Vihta Vuori powders that are on the slow side of the burn chart.

Just my .02, hope it helps.

Granted that I only shoot a 225 gr bullet out of my 338-378, I am slightly over 3k fps using 102.5 gr of VV N165. You may give that a try.

When I switched from H1000 to RL25 in my 338 edge I gained a little velocity and my ES got even better. I quit using H1000 due to very eratic behavior in new lots I have bought.

Give Retumbo a try, it burns SO much cleaner than RL25 and US869. It is working well in my 338 Lapua IMP with the 300SMK. Start with the same starting load you used with the 1000 and work up.
