Hey guys, I just got a 17" .308 barrel for my encore and plan on using it for elk hunting next year. I have been wanting to try some match grade bullets after reading a lot of good about them on here. The two I am considering are the 168 gr. SMK and 168 gr. AMAX. Do you guys have any experience on which one will work better? Shots will be kept to 350 yards and less. Thanks!

I may be in the minority here, but for 350yd shots why are you desiring to use a match bullet? I know people use them successfully but others have issues with the fragmenting at higher velocities (ie shorter 200-350 yd shots) especially on larger animals. Since you don't need the long range performance of say a VLD why not use something like an Accubond? SMKs are no more accurate in my elk rifle than ABs.

See the recent SMK results thread posted on this forum. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I hear a lot fewer failure stories with premium game bullets.

Not that there aren't instances I would not try a match bullet, but big game within 350 yds does not give me a compelling reason to actively choose one.

Actually, you are right. 350 yards is no great distance, and i probably would be served better with the accubond. Thanks
