Hello all

What is your favorite barrel for custom
rifels/pistols.

I have used HART,DOUGLAS,SHILLEN,SHOULTZ
and MACMILLAN.

I feel there may be something better and
would like to hear from everyone.

Please elaborate (good and bad)Opinions
and experiences.

Also chrome moly verses stainless.

Thanks

I got a lilja on one that Im going to pick up when I get a chance from the smith and have a rock creek on the way for another build. Tell ya after I test.

I have used Kreiger , Hart , Lilja ,Douglas , Wiseman , Rock Creek , Shilen anda few others all with good results I think that as long as its a quality hand lapped barrel your gonna get good results.

I persoanly like the ORck Creek because of the 5R rifleing it seems to be a general concesus that they actualy shoot a little faster and last a little longer than others although the 3 Groove from Lilja and Pac-Nor are also supposed to do the same , I seriously doubt that you could tell a differance with using both on twin guns and shooting them to death.
I have an Obermeyer on a 300 Mag that simply amazes me with it velocities , its shooting about 100fps faster than it should wioth zero pressure signs.
Broughton also makes a 5C barrel like the 5R thats supposed to be great to.

Thanks JD & Screech

This gives me a good starting place.

If anyone else has any more information
please pass it on.

Thanks for the help

Any of the top bbl makers will make you a great bbl. W/that said, I have a 5c Broughton on my 6-250 and it is my favorite bbl. Cleans easier than the 3 groove Lilja I had. Can't say it shoots any better though.

My short list

Lilja
Rock
Hart
Broughton
Krieger
Lawton

Take your pick. There are others of course but these are what I recommend to my customers.

Get a top end barrel and you will find the fitting and chambering of the barrel make more difference then which brand of top end barrel you use.

Have you had any experience with Obermeyer barrels.

he cuts the groves deeper than others.

example= .274 for 7mm and .298 for 308.

I agree that fitting and chambering makes
the most difference but with so many barrel
makers and manufacturing techniques it makes
it difficult to chose what's best for the
customer's caliber and usage.

Again THANKS

JE Custom,

No I have never personally fitted one of these barrels. I have heard nothing but good about them, especially in 30 cal barrels but never used one.

For my 30 cal barrels I generally will use a Lilja 1-10 4 groove or a Rock 5R.

Like you said, there are so many good barrels out there its hard to try them all. I find ones perform to my specs or better and stick with them just to take some pressure off my feable mind trying to remember what barrels I use for what chamberings!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Again, I have heard nothing but good about the Obermeyer barrels, just never used one.

JE, i'm partial to Rock Creek, but i agree that the smithing is probably 90% of getting one that will shoot.i do think the odd number/canted lands are better and i prefer cut rifling given the choice.

Thanks to all /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

With this list of recomended barrels I should
be in good shape,

I like to make recommendations to the customer
based on what would be best for there type of
shooting.

Some times long delivery may be a problem for
the customer so another brand of barrel of
equal quality may be available.

Like fiftydriver I tend to stick with what works
but I hate having all of my eggs in one basket.

Most people dont want to wait 2years for a custom
rifle. When the though pops into there head it makes
for a good experience if you can hand them a finished
rifle in 2or3 months. And fun is what it's all about.

Quality and service from all of the component manufactures
is what it takes to make this happen.

I have read some horror stories on this and other sites
that could have been prevented if the customer and the
smith were on the same page befor starting the project.

Again THANKS to all
