Hunting in Alaska I come across anything from silt storms in glacial river beds to salt spray on a boat. I have always been under the assumption that open adjustments would be detrimental.

True? Perhaps don't know enough about scope construction....
 
Not on a quality scope.

I like the approach Leupold has come up with in the VX-6 series though with their pop up turrets.

The problem with exposed turrets is that they can easily get bumped resulting in your rifle being "off" if you have to make a quick shot and don't have time to check them.
