I am considering having a 270wsm throated, it is on a medium action so I have room.
Just wondering if those of you that have done this saw some gains or if it caused other issues???

Gary

I've wondered this for a while as well with my 300WSM. It has a longer throat already, but it's not quite where it should be for the 215s. I've had a unithroater in my cart to rent online and always chickened out. It shoots so good now, is a couple extra FPS worth possibly screwing up accuracy?
Let's us know what you end up doing.

It's a new build, that was the plan from the start, but I just wonder if there really is any gain??

I think it is defiantly worth it if you are just getting it built. If you look up load data online you'll see shooting WSMs from med or long actions does get you speed. Just like using a 6.5-284 in a long action.
Understand you will not be able to get to the lands if you have it throated for the 170 Berger and then try to use something like a 130. If you're good with that then go for it. I initially had my 300 WSM throated for 180-190 bullets because I thought I would use mid weight bullets more often, but once I saw how good the 215s shoot I stuck with them. Now, I fell like I'm leaving a little speed on the table when there is still a little room in the mag.

That's what I needed, a little nudge. Thanks guys.
I'll be shooting the 165 ablr's or maybe the 155lrx's

Idaho is taking surveys on copper only thoughts so I'll see if I can get one of those to shoot.
I know the ablr's shoot out of the standard chamber.

Thanks again

Surveys? Please explain.

I got an email from I'm assuming a student at U of I that had a survey attached asking a bunch of questions about my opinions on copper only use.
I started the survey but did not finish it.
Really didn't want to give them any fuel. And don't want be forced to used something.

I currently use one copper in a 33 nosler. My thought on coppers is that I think that they would work well with larger calibers but not as well with smaller calibers. The 33 nosler seams to kill just fine out at 600 with copper but it's a big bullet to start with.

I'm right there with you! I dislike copper but I dislike the ability to choose for yourself even more.

Probably i see is the throat you have it at ir want it at might not give good groups with powder(s) and primer combo with your selected bullet(s). In a few of my rifles the throats are short even for light to medium weight bullets and are very short on published data by .050-.075". Should a person throat a little at a time with an oal you want?

I can't say that I "Dislike" coppers, really don't have enough experience on animals to give a educated opinion. I like a bullet that mushrooms but stays together for the most part.

The routine is to have a bullet that you want to use and make a dummy with that bullet and cut the throat to a desired clearance for that bullet that has been seated in the case out do a desired length.

Understand. I guess the point is whether or not you like or dislike them a lot of people have no need to use them if what they already have works. So the dislike is an arbitrary mandate to use only them. Which is more than likely what the aim is.

i get that as most are for 1 specific bullet, but when you throat just far enough that groups start getting worse, then what. for those that run close to lands unlike those that jump them there, then what. like some people that have a 30cal w/215's using a purpose designed reamer although they've used it before, but's a no-go in this barrel
