Steel targets

Ok I'm curious what's the reason regular steel plate is frowned upon as a steel target?
Mild Steel actually splatters, and the pock mark can cause ricochets,6.5x284 norma at 500 yards

When you have AR500 the bullet impacts, flattens out, and usually falls there. With AR500 the paint is just removed to show the hit.
As you can see from the target from 338 posted all the hits, a bullet can hit those and cause a ricochet. Good example of what not to use especially if you are shooting a pistol 10,20,30 yards away.
Also hang you steel or angle it toward the ground.
