I just went through and tried to make my own steel targets... There was a little trial and error.
I tried taking a plate and welding a chain to it and suspending that from a stand. I didn't put enough chain on it and shot through the 3/8" plate at 300 yards.
I took the same plates and attached them with something readily available in any farm town... Round baler strap. It's just a long rubber belt. I made the stand out of scrap 2x4's and an axle out of a model T that I had been using for a pry bar.
