This happens with quality brass also. Fire forming 7-08 to AI, I had 6/100 pieces fail the same way. Obviously, the first firing. Alpha said they wouldn't do anything because it was being turned into AI.

Why would a person use vinegar on a piece of brass?
I'm assuming it'll act like cat urine which I learned earlier is bad.

Vinegar can leach zinc from brass with frequent or extended use, which is not great.

Ammonia is waaaaay weirder. For historical context, look up "season cracking." I don't fully understand the underlying science, but if brass has residual stress in its structure (read: work hardening), the ammonia and copper combine. This reaction happens at the grain boundaries of the brass, and the product of the reaction is water soluble. The brass then cracks along that weakened boundary.

I'm not a frequent brass cleaner, maybe after every 3-4 firings. Definitely wouldn't be scrubbing or submerging my brass in vinegar although I do like it on French fries.

Me either. I tumble mine. Most time after 2nd firing.
