I hate to admit this but I had shoulder surgery a few months back and I can't take the recoil of my usual carry rifle, a Model 7 in .260 Rem. Hunting is mostly done up here in Unit 1 in Northern Idaho but I always have a wolf tag and a gun with me on the snow machine just in case.

I have a Tikka in .243 AI and my thought is to use that now that the bears are sleeping and I usually only see wolf tracks and their left overs at a kill sites anyway. My question is anyone out that uses a 80gr Barnes TSX in the .243 for wolf size critters and if so what kind of performance have you experienced? I use TTSX in other guns with good results but never the 80gr 6mm. I also have a 6x45 AR that I could use as well with the same bullet...less recoil than the .243.

Any thoughts will be appreciated!!

In my past experiences with a model 7 in a 260, it recoiled harder than my 270 or even my 7 mag with 168 grainers but it is a heavy barrel, have not used the 80 grain barnes in 243, but loved the 95 grain nosler in mine with light recoil and a gut and drag session to follow each firing! Just my opinion hope you have access to some of these

If you like the rifle (260 rem) another way to solve the problem would be to install a good muzzle brake that could reduce recoil by 50% plus, until your shoulder gets better.

After you heal up, you can take it off and use a muzzle nut/thread protector if you don't want to use it any more.

Just a thought.

I have never shot a wolf, just stating that up front.

That said, are they really that hard to kill? Id imagine that the AR would do just fine on them, and agree it would be less recoil than the 243 and easier to brake if it is still too much.

Do they circle like coyotes when hit? If so the AR would be good for follow up as well.

Maybe a faster opening bullet than the tsx would be good if you want to anchor them on the spot.

My shoulders are all messed up also.

I have my beloved Ruger #1 in 7 mag and at this point, the recoil is intolerable.

I use a PAST recoil pad that is meant to be used by a lady shooting skeet or something like that.

The pad makes the 7 shootable for me and helps me not flinch when I shoot multiple rounds.

Soon I will be loading down so I can still use my rifle.

Check out the Hogdon reloading sight for reduced recoil loads using H4895, I believe you will find information that will help you to use your 260 anytime you want. Reduce your load, use a softer bullet and go out and shoot wolves. Please.

If you can hunt there with a suppressor, they are much more fun and pleasant to shoot with than a brake. The brake has a slight edge in recoil reduction, but the massive concussion from the best brakes make me flinch. I think if suppressors were as easy to get and cheap as brakes then you wouldnt see nearly as many brakes. Wont help in the short term since it will take sixmonths to get the stupid stamp back but i have never met anyone who has one that regrets it.

thanks gents! Lots of good ideas.

I think I'll go with the AR in 6x45 and the Sierra 85gr HPBT. It will kill whitetail so I'm pretty confident the wolves won't miss out with a good placed hit. Now all I gotta do is find some.

Maybe after the current resident of the White House leaves we can get suppressors removed from the NFA and be handled just like any gun on a 4473...no reason it shouldn't be and that'll save a lot of folks hearing too.

I have a tikka 270 weighs 7 3\4 lbs with scope. I had shoulder surgery also and even a limbsaver slip on and a leather mitten behind that still hurt. I bought a Past magnum recoil pad and don"t even feel it now. It's awsome. 35 bucks ! Shoot what you want.

Forgot to mention I didn't try shooting till I had 5+ months recovery and every shoulder is different. I had labral repair on the back and bicep tendon relocated at the front.
