Side charging AR10

I recently built a side charging AR10 in 308. I went with a Gibbz non reciprocating side charging upper/lower set and a proof 18" barrel.

The whole thing started when I got a Burris XTRII 1.5-8 scope for a 450 bushmaster. I quickly realized this was too much glass for the 450 BM. So I really had no choice but to build an ar10 to put it on.

I had to do a little fiddling around with buffer weights and gas blocks initially but now that it's got a couple hundred rounds thru it it is running like a top.

The only down side was if I used my suppressor it was way over gassed and sprayed gas into your face, if adjusted down to limit that it would short stroke without the suppressor.

I decided to just run this one sans suppressor.

Accuracy isn't quite what I expected from a proof barrel. The best accuracy I have gotten was with 175gr federal gold metal match, averaging just under 1" for 5 shots st 100 yards. Several other loads run in the 1.25-1.75" for 5 shots.

The one happy note is that everything from 147gr ball, 150 fusions, 155 Hornady HPBT, 168 SMK and Hornady HPBT, and 175gr SMK all print into a 2.5" group right to the same basic POI.

Any ideas to wring out a bit more accuracy?

8x maybe the limiting factor.
aim small miss small, 8 aint in the small catagory.
i personally have no use for an 18" 308 esp with 168 on up.
shooting platform is an issue.
need a solid front rest, rear bag.

my ar10(t), 24" factory bbl shoots aprox .5, small is a .33. 4-5x14x, has worn an 8-32 in the past.
target ar10 is a whole 'nother ball game. 36x scope, 1/15 twist, 24" krieger.
small group at 100 is a 0.116"...like i said a TARGET rifle.
I like the way you think...

Granted I have been shooting off bipod, have yet to set it in a solid bag up front. There is also a bit of flex in the collapsable butt stock that probably isn't doing accuracy any favors.

For my intentions of this rifle it shoots well enough, I just thought it might do a little better than it is.

My AR10 is also a Gibbz. Love it. Which handguard is that - looks nice?

Nice. I have two Gibz/New Frontier uppers. Dracos had a blem sale for Black Friday. Picked up a .243 and .260 REALLY Cheap. For what I saved on the barrels, I figured I could spend a little more on the upper. Have not shot them yet. Did see on the Dracos site they recommend using an adjustable gas key. Will see if I need to do that.
