Shorter 6.5/284

Not that I can think of, but I wonder if a wildcat is not out there.
What about a .260AI? They run well in a short action, but are a touch longer than the Creedmoor cases.

The .260AI sure outruns a 6.5 Creed though. I have two. A 24" and a 20". Very impressive numbers.

If you don't have to have a standard bolt face short action, you can always look at a short mag. The 6.5SST or 6.5SS are the same length as a Creed case, but based off a SAUM case. Good case capacity (more than a 6.5-.284), Great speeds.

Not that I'm aware of. There really is no reason, yes, I know we don't need a reason.

Probably 25-30 years ago, I had that same idea cross my mind. So I designed and built the reduction dies necessary for the process and started modifying the brass for a shorter case. In the mean time a British shooter contacted me about this case, wanting it for F-Class competitions. I made a 100 or so cases and sent them off for his testing.

It turns out, as many will surmise, there are other cases in existence which fulfill that niche without the wearisome case modifications. No, they don't look like the .284 case but they perform as wanted. Sometimes you just have to give in and move on.

Enjoy!

A 26wssm Imp can do anything a 6.5x284 could viably do -with 140gr bullets -using way less powder.
Then again, a shorter 6.5x284 can also do anything a standard 6.5x284 could viably do with 140gr bullets, using way less powder.
This is because anything over 260AI capacity for 140gr bullets, loses efficiency and can't handle pressure as well.

It would be very easy to make any lower capacity you desire using a 6.5x284 case. You just need a forming die set.
Just remember: it all begins with a bullet.

The efficiency of the cartridge I think is the key. The more capacity the less efficient it will be. I worked up a load with the 6.5 CM using Reloader 26 and a 140gr. Bullet and achieved 2879 fps. In a 24" barrel. That cartridge is very efficient. I just wandered where the limit of the efficiency is. I suppose I would be rich I could predict that LOL.

FY,I I got well over 2900 fps with that combo rl-26 and 140 gr. Bullet. No pressure signs. Settled on 47.7 gr. At 2879. I didn't want to push any further.
With that kind of performance maybe I should just be satisfied.
