Scope mounting question--basic

Ok, I finally bit the bullet and am setting up a long range platform--Savage Model 12 F in 6.5x284, Nightforce rail, rings, ATACR scope. Problem is that the Rail, NF part A168, comes w/ five screws, two short, three long, and the rifle & rail have four holes. I can't find anywhere to tell me which screw to put in which hole??? I'm assuming that if I put a long screw in the hole for a short one, something is going to bind--like the bolt. And, I didn't want to torque anything down before being ABSOLUTLY certain I was doing it right in risk of marring something. Any help would be appreciated.

Any depth gauge (even a tire tread depth gauge) will tell you how deep the holes are. If you don't have depth gauge you can easily make one using any straight rigid rod that will fit easily into the hole and run it through a thick piece of heavy weight paper that will identify the length of the rod - hence the length of screw the hold will accept.

and when you've got the screw lengths identified, remember to use this method:

Great guidance all around. Thank you. This is why I love reading these boards--it's the simply fixes that are often the best.

You can also put the screws in the rail and see if any stick out the bottom further than the others. I would assume the long go in the back and the short in the front due to cant.

Also if you can't tell any difference put one screw through the rail and screw into the action. Just finger tight and see if there is any play in the rail, then do the next one and so on, just one at a time. Check to see if any bottom out before getting tight.

I have had a few rifles that the very front screw would bottom out and not allow the rail or ring to tighten completely. In that case I had to file the one screw down a little so it would tighten.

If you have a caliper there should be a little end opposite the jaws that extends out and allows you to measure hole depth.

The screw holes in the rail are all the same depth. I did put the screws through and the short ones extended less than the long ones. Thanks.
