I found a Savage model 12 BVSS in 6.5-284 for 600 bucks, is this a good deal? its brand new in the box. also, what is a good load to start with im gonna use 120SMKs. Also, I have a savage model 10 in 308 with a choate tactical stock on it. Im thinking of selling it, what would be a good asking price? thanks

My Model 12 BVSS began life as a 22-250, back when Savage did not have a medium action. Since then, I have had two custom barrels on it both in 6.5-284. Both shot well with Sierra 142 gr. MK, and 52 grs. H 4350. I kept the load low because it was half MOA, and I did not want to burn up the barrel quickly. That is a good price, but remember: this caliber has a reputation for short barrel life. Both of my barrels when downhill after 1200 rounds. Unable to answer you on the Model 12, check gunbroker.

Dman - BUY IT! I bought the same rifle back in March of this year and what a shooter! Mine is stamped Model 12 on the barrel, however, it is a long action. I have a 112BVSS in .300WinMag and the bolts are interchangeable, as far as fit goes.
The first bullet I shot out of mine was the 100gn Ballistic Tip. The very first group measured .327" with these and AA3100. I shot these for the start of barrel break-in and was pleasantly surprised. I only had five 100gn bullets so I did no further testing with these pills.
Next I moved on to the 120gn SMK with AA3100 and BR2 primers. I loaded 50.0gn for testing and barrel break-in. The first three of these produced a .452". Not great but this is barrel break-in. I went on up to 54.0gns and found 53.5gn and 54.0gn was accurate with groups printing .346" and .3845", respectively. The 54.0gn loaded printed 3.0" groups at 500yds.
I tried IMR4831, from 50.0 - 51.5gn, but nothing there that caught my eye.
The Sierra 100gn HP with H4350/BR2's (53.5-54.0gn) shot in the .2's

I tried the 140gn Remington AccuTip with H4350, RL22 and BR2's: 48.0gn of H4350 had great numbers for ES (2.74) and SD (1.41) but velocity was 2877fps and acccuracy ran just under an inch at 100yds and didn't try it any further out.
I then tried RL25 and 120NBT and BR2's. 58.5gn was the most accurate at .3445" and veloctiy ran 3225fps. This load produces superb accuracy in my rifle and will probably be the demise of a couple deer this season. It has produced the best accuracy at 500yds, coming in at just under 1.5".
