I've decided I'm not so fond of the 6.5 or 260 craze anymore. I was using a Remington milspec in 308 and got a great deal on a ss Sendero with fluted barrel and either Hs or BC stock. Planning to keep speeds around 2900 fps. Reloading Hornady eldx and can't wait for some range time. Going to put the 6x20 Nightforce on when funds allow but for now going to use Vortex HS series in 6x24x50. I've been exclusively using imr 4831 and rl22 for an older ADL which needs a new barrel after 20 some years. Thinking of trying some H1000 or Imr 4451 which done great in my 300 wsm. Any suggestions

I'll need to buy some more. Used it all up and am down to imr 4350

I run H1000 in mine and it does great. Bedded the recoil lug and installed a Timney. That combo slinging 215 Bergers is hard to beat.

So did you pick up a 6.5 or 308? 2900fps is great, but what weight bullet? I'm guessing a 6.5 but you immediately disclose your lack of fondness.

I haven't used the 6.5 but used a Tikka CTR in 260 for about a year. Drawback to me was short barrel. I do use a Remington milspec in 308 that I like but even my old adl 7mag would out distance it. I was referring to keeping a 160 grain eld in the Sendero at around 2900 to 3000 fps. Mostly ran the 140 grain 260 and 175 match king in the 308 around 2750. Accuracy dropped off over that on the short actions. I have ran the milspec with 180 grain nosler bt's at close to 2840 max for a hunting load. Groups better also. Knew I could drive the 7mag faster if need be. No issues with short actions just wanted something bigger. Tried to find same gun in 300 wsm but no luck. Have a lot of friends I shoot with that love the 6.5. Not that I don't like either short action. Just burnt out on it I guess.

I like H1000 in my 300wm. I push 210s with it in my Sendero. NO WAY I would even try H4350 in it. I love and hoard that powder for my 6.5s but the supply is so fickle that I'd never want to have a powder hungry magnum to feed with it. H1000 is much easier to find. Norma MRP works really well also.

Not following your dislike for the 6.5. I get the limitations of a 20" barrel (I have a .260 CTR also) but it seems funny to buy a short barreled rifle and then complain about the short barrel limitations. Lol! I also have a 24" Creedmoor that's pushing 140s at 2825 with consistent .25moa out to 800 where it begins opening up to .4-.5moa out to 1200. Just sayin, maybe experimenting with a longer barrel might have been in order? Lol! Must have been a long year. :/

Enjoy your new rifle!

I missed half my post and just noticed the confusion. The newSendero I bought is a 7mm Magnum. As for the short barrel on the 260 cry it was only bought for hunting purposes. Dang thing was so accurate out to 5/600 yards but was never intended for the bench but I enjoyed it. Sorry for the confusion.

OK, now that the clambering is cleared up, I can add my .02. I was thinking you had a .308WIN and wanted to push a 160 to 2900-3000.

For my 26" 7RM, I use H1000 behind a 168 HVLD @ 3075fps and 180 Hybrid @ 2996fps.

H4831 should easily get you over 2900 with a 160. In fact, I am building a .280AI right now with hopes of pushing a 160 TMK Or 168 HVLD @ 2900. Should be easy in a 7RM.

I was getting a little confused myself seeing the replies until I realized I was the numbscull that didn't type the post correctly. I agree with the powders and velocity for sure. I use imr 4831 and h4831 sc for most loads. A few 165-170 with RL 22. I've got a pound of H1000 but had only used it in a 300 and 338 win mag. Hoping 2900 to 3000 fps wont burn the barrel out as quick pushing 160 rain eld X at these velocities.

I recently picked up a Sendero in 7mm RM and I'm working up a load. So far I'm at 71.2gn of Retumbo with a 162 ELD-X. Best group so far is .201 and velocities well above 3000 which surprised me.

My iPad types as it wants. The 162 grain eld X is what I'm loading for not 160. To date I've not seen any Retumbo in lgs here. I hear a lot of good things about it. It's rained almost every day since I bought it. I've loaded about 100 162 eld with 3 different powders. Another 150 grain moly coated nosler ballistic tips with an old tried and true use in my old adl. Going to use them to zero it in. Loaded some 145 Speer hot cor just to try. It has to like something if I ever get to the range.
