I have a very unique Remington 700 mountain rifle chambered in 257 Roberts. Was told was a custom ordered rifle or a custom shop rifle. I can not find the configuration listed anywhere which leads me to believe it is at least coston ordered from Remington. 22" mountain rifle contour barrel short rr prefix action satin blued, no barrel date code on the barrel x-pro trigger and Laminated stock remington butt pad. Every mountain rifle I have seen in blue was in a walnut stock. That's what makes me believe it is a ordered rifle. Attached are photos. Was told it was unfired and everything looks to be that way. Any ideas of value?

I don't have a good answer, but every gun I've seen from the custom shop did not have the 'warning' info stamped on the barrel.
That's what I thought too but I heard that at the end before they folded things where not the same. I had bought barreled actions form ptg 2 years ago that they called custom shop buy out and they where all stamped

The only thing I can tell you for sure Scott is that at the end of a manufacturers life, when they are going out of business, there are no rules being followed.

The only concern in the factory is to get the absolute most product out the door before the bank and investors close it up. You will find dozens of examples of non-typical assemblies in the hands of the general public with parts that don't match a factory description. Remington was as guilty of this as any other factory in the same position. The point being is that inventory got used up and money came into the books.

While yours is a nice rifle, without the paperwork (provenance) to back up the proposed description, it's your word against any others.

Good Luck with the search!

:)

You can find info about your rifle using the serial number.
I remember when I bought my 416 Remington from the custom shop, it had an Alaskan designation but made no mention of it on the rifle itself. It was when synthetic stocks were first coming into use.
Early 90's era rifle, stainless satin with a synthetic stock, wish I had some photos, but do not.
I think you could ask a premium price for it, just like a Sendero or the like.

Cheers.

Looks almost identical to my VLS black tip in .223 which was unfired until last weekend. Only difference being yours is flat and mine is satin blued. Value to be in the 1200.00s

General info about the no date code thing.

(*) On 8/9/99, stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box. They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.

So given that the RR serial number didn't start for almost ten years after that, it would seem that it's a conglomeration of parts. As far as value, it's worth what someone will pay. And in the last decade of their manufacture, I haven't seen a 1k dollar Remington produced given their lack of QC.

OK. Serial number doesn't tell the date the rifle was assembled. For that you need the date code on the left side if the barrel that you say isn't there. The link below will be your guide.

Check for the other inspection and proof marks.

If you want some assistance interpreting I can help. You say it has no barrel code which is hard to believe. I have only seen this on some new RA serial numbers (RemArms) rifles. The RR serial numbers started in 2013 and ran until 2020 when the plant shut down in Bankruptcy.

This rifle would likely have come out of Dakota Arms as they took over the duties but I'm not sure of when that happened. There is a 700Rifle website that you might want of visit.
