morning. Is it possible to take a 223AI SS barrel off a rem.788? rechamber

to 22-243 and reinstall on a rem 722. I have all the parts. Please advise.

You'll have to cut the whole tenon off, which is pretty long on a 788. If it's a factory barrel they are smaller OD and the taper begins right in front of the action, it won't work. If it's a heavier custom barrel, it'll work, just end up shorter.

It would be much easier to start with a Rem700 barrel in 223 since the tennon, theads, and counterbore is already correct.

Just chamber it to the correct headspace and screw it on.

morning, the barrel is an add on for long range shooting. the add on barrel is

SS 28". I had the barrel rechambered to 223 AI. Now was going to rechamber to

22-243AI. question r the actions faces the same for taking the barrel off the 788 and

reinstalling on the 722?? THK.Ulightbulb:)gun)

The tenon on the 788 is smaller. Action faces are all the same... flat. In layman's terms, the 788 uses a 15/16ths bolt and the 700 uses a 1". You are going to have to cut the whole tenon (bolt end of barrel) off and start over.

What is the outside diameter of the after market barrel? If it's 1.250" for a couple inches in front of the action, then you've got enough shank to make a new tenon and still have enough to form a shoulder (bolt head) for the recoil lug and action.

The M788 thread tenon is 1" in diameter with 20 TPI.

The M722 thread ten is 1.062" with 16 TPI.

The answer is NO unless you cut off the M788 tenon and start over.

Regards.

Boy, you guys type a lot faster than I do...
