If you took a custom action and attached it to a custom barrel and then took that barrel off and attached it to an over-the-counter action would the custom action and barrel combination outshoot the over-the-counter action and custom barrel all the time?

Since I assume a custom action to be a trued "blue print" action built to exacting standards it would only be a coincidence for a standard action to replicate the custom receiver accuracy given all other variables constant.

Depends on what you mean by outshoot. Some factory actions are better served as paperweights from a fit/finish, feeding, cycling and ergonomics perspective despite making good groups.

I am curious about what you mean what is your definition of "out shoot?" I have never owned a custom receiver, so I do not know. What I do know is that I use factory Ruger 77 actions (supposedly they are not known to be accurate receivers) that have been trued (blueprinted) and then have a custom "new" (Lilja) barrel fitted to the barrel. I then glass bed, pillar bed and float the barrel on a factory stock. These rifles to date shoot better than I can shoot them. I am shooting sub MOA at 100. I suspect that a custom receiver will shoot better?? This is the best that I have.

I feel like it could go either way depending on which actions you choose and who is putting them together.


The guy putting it together can have a large effect on the final outcome - I feel like the fit can be more important than the part

It's an individual choice. How accurate do you want to be? Do you have the money to get to that point?

For me, I'm happy with what I have and the accuracy of my rifles.

Generally there are a lot "smiths" not worthy of the name. Hyperbolic marketing says factory brands never have a lemon.

I have an off the shelf Tikka that makes me question why I ever had a rifle built. Some othesr off the shelf as well. Some I just gave away too embarrassed to sell.

Pin down the parameters first. Then measure results against that.

Yes, almost always, the custom rifle & barrel would be unique and if assembed with care would be more accurate. - "all rifles are different and this rifle is mine"

At least consider squaring face of receiver to tread form & lapping bolt lugs. The over the counter bolt gun would not have this.

My stock Ruger Hawkeye 6.5 CM with the investment cast receiver, comes real close to performing as well as custom barreled rifle that has same kind of receiver/action, but custom barrel, & squared/lapped, in 6.5 CM with optimum loads for each rifle.

I am actually curious as to why would anyone do such a thing.

You should have posted as such then. Personal preference, budget, and intended purpose, etc., plays a major factor in the decision-making.

I'll say this…..this past weekend I went to a shooting event and was edged out by a ten thousandth of an inch as far as group size goes. I was shooting a factory Savage model 10 action, Oryx Chassis and a custom 22 BR-A barrel from The Urban Rifleman. The rifle/shooter that BARELY beat me had a Defiance action, Brux barrel, McMillans stock, custom bedding, etc, etc. Considering ALL the variables involved I seriously doubt it was the "custom components" that smacked me for a ten thousandth of an inch. Oh, and "I" was actually driving the rifle off a bipod…..the other shooter from a custom high-end front rest.
