I am looking for what everyone suggests for factory ammo for yotes. I am headed to ND in Oct and will be chasing yotes when I am not chasing pheasants. I have a factory IO with a 8 twist barrel. It shoot cheap 62gr, steel core FN ammo pretty good. I am looking to find out what would work best for yotes. I know that I cannot use non-expanding ammo per ND regs. What factory ammo do any of you guy/gals use if you use a 5.56/223 in a gas gun. I would like to stay in the higher grain weight if possible. I have looked at Hornady Superformance, but was unsure what would expand and drop them quick. I know to shoot what ever the gun shoots best, but would like some suggestions.
Thanks in advance,
Craig

My experience hunting coyotes is admittedly small, but I dropped one last year immediately with a 77gr Tipped Match King out of an AR with a 1/8 twist. You might try either Federal GMM or Black Hills factory offerings. Barnes 69 gr OTM ammo is currently on sale on midway if you want to give that a shot as well.

Are you a hide, and fur kind of guy? If not most any expanding bullet gets you there.

As has been said the 53 grain v-max superformance is a good balance.

In my experience you get dirt dead performance in 40 v-maxs and 50 v-max in either Federal or Fiocchi and they will shoot amazingly well unless you go beyond 300 yards for the 40 and 500 yards for the 50,,, ya ya i know what you guys are gonna say, but the 1-8 will shoot these well ! And at a far better bulk pricing .....

Oh and you wont get dirt dead hits with heavy bullets and they are pretty inhumane unless you hit a lot of bone ,or get heart or head shots !!! And if anyone tells you different about heavy bullets there shitting you, period !

My Bushmaster Varmint model with a 24" barrel shoots the Federal Premium 55 grain BT pretty well. I think my rifle has a 1:9 twist. I have shot .5" 3 shot groups at 100 yards with these. It also shoots the Federal Gold Medal Match 69 grain Match Kings nearly as good, but groups are not quite as tight. Either will kill a coyote no problem.

55gr ballistic tips are ok.....
BUT !
Even Hornady will tell you ,,,,DO NOT USE MATCH BULLETS FOR HUNTING !!!
And that goes double for 55gr FMJs

IMHO, That would mostly be because they want to sell you "hunting bullets". There's literally thousands of dead critters at the hands of "match" bullets that will sing a different tune.

Is a match bullet better than a hunting bullet? no. Do they work? Absolutely. Berger was just another "Match" bullet at one point too; remember?

OP, if you can grab a couple OTC boxes of ammo do so and see what your rifle likes. Yotes don't take a lot to kill, really pretty much anything for 40-77grns will stack'em by the truck load. The lighter the bullet, the more expansion you're likely to have. BUT, it'll cost you in LR performance (i.e. wind drift) that's the catch. If you don't plan on +400 yd shots, I'd probably stick to the lighter end of the spectrum. But most any of them will work.

Dude talk about a crock of **** ,,,,a pellet gun hit will eventually kill them, lead poisoning/infection I have no doubt a match will Kill too, just not as fast and efficiently, on general body hits especially ! Head shots and Heart shots are a different thing a can you do that 100% of the time !

You might just as well be using an FMJ !!! Don't believe me,,,, go to predatormasters.com and ask real yote hunters, they will laugh you off the sight for using a match bullet ! There is no comparison between a Ballistic tip or even a true hollow point which match bullets are NOT !

OR call any bullet/ammo manufacturer and ask, they will tell you the same thing ! Its not about selling you bullets because you have to buy the match bullet any ways ! Its about common sense! JHC !

If you cant afford the correct ammo for yotes then by all means use the match, just be prepared to have to chase them down to finish them off or let them have a long slow lingering and painful death !!!

That yote experiences the same emotions as you would if you were being hunted,,, they deserve a quick humane death !!!!!!!

Go easy peaches, we're all friends here. If you had caught the "IMHO" at the beginning of my statement you would have translated that into "In My Humble Opinion". You have yours and I have mine.

With due respect, I don't care what PredatorMasters say you have to use. With the statement you make, I assume you're 100% against the use of bow and arrow on as arrows don't expand either; how inhumane....

If you wish to derail this thread further with a ****ing match, let's take it to PM.

Depends on what tip you are using on that arrow !!!! Denial seems to be your defense for your stupidity ! And i'm done with this Moron !!!!!

Hornady 53gr superformance has been doing all the killing in my ar this year. From crows to a vehicle struck deer they've been reliable and deadly, quickly. They've hit yotes like lightning for me this time of year I'll leave them laying but the fur damage hasn't been crazy bad unless I hit major bone.

My go-to .223 off the shelf ammo is Black Hills 50gr V-max. I have killed LOTS of yotes with that ammo. Some folks say the 50gr Vmax will "splash" if it hits the shoulder or rib bones. Never had a issue personally.

This dog I shot a couple of weeks ago in Idaho at 276 yards with the above ammo.
