Sorry guys, not a long range ML question. I am thinking about buying my Wife a lighter ML, I notice that Midway is selling a Pursuit UL XLT 50 cal. for $249.99. I think the sale is fine, but I don't want to buy it if it is not a good rifle. If I buy it I will likely work up a load with 90-100 gr. BH209 (volume) & Scorpion 260 gr.
Any personal experience or knowledge on this one?

A guy brought one over last fall needing a little help with it. He ended up bringing it over a couple times, as two of the scopes he had were bad (junk). Once we put a new Nikon on it, it shot very good. I shot it myself a few times and although I'm used to modified Encore platform rifles, this rifle handled pretty nice. It is lightweight, lighter than my Pro Hunter but, it handled well. I believe that being lighter, it'll carry much easier for someone that needs a lighter weight rifle. On the other hand, light weight and any heavy bullet with a higher charge, will most likely increase the felt recoil.

We setup Paul's rifle using the FCX Lead Sled. Once he put a quality (one that wasn't screwed up) scope on it, he was grouping 1" to 1.5" consistently with it at the 100yd mark. We moved back to 150yds and he was keeping it at or under 2".

His load was using CCI209M primers, 110grs VOLUME BH209 and Barnes 290gr T-EZ bullets. We tried a few of my 250gr TMZ's and they loaded a little tight but, once he gets the manufacturing marks shot out of it, they should load fine, if he wanted to shoot a lighter bullet. I know he's very happy with his....... A nice rifle in the price range.

Thanks Encore for that info! I agree about the recoil, that's why I will like load the 250-260 gr. & not go over 100 gr. of BH. She is not likely to shoot over 150 yds anyway.

On a side note, I wish my luck with the Encore was good as it should be. I sold my barrel & have a stainless frame with beautifu wood. I am pondering whether to sell or try another barrel.

Thanks again!!

Here's what I'd do with that Encore frame.......... I'd order a barrel from Mike and while I was at it, also buy a couple larger hinge pins (1x-2x), 44# hammer spring, HD locking bolt spring, HD firing pin spring and a trigger spring of your choice. You'll have about $35.00 in parts plus the barrel. Just that $35 in parts and a little work, will make ANY Encore platform rifle feel like a different rifle. Tightening up break open rifles can make a world of difference in accuracy and groups.

I guess my Wife will continue to use the Rem 700ML, she does quite well with it, but I am getting concerned about the bolt/reliable fire.

I ordered a Bergara .50 cal. barrel for my Encore today from Midsouth. Mike B. likes them it appears, we shall see. My TC barrel was not very good. Gonna order some 300 Gr. Scorpions/CR sabots.

Thanks for all the replies.

Was Mike out or did you just not order from him? Mike has a tendency to check Bergara barrels over really well for his customers prior to them purchasing them. You'll find his seconds for sale on Ebay and I believe one other site. It appears that some Bergara barrels he receives doesn't meet his expectations, therefore he sells them as seconds.

No, I bought from Midsouth, only stating he seems to like them. If I get a dud, I will sell the frame, I tried one TC barrel & I won't go for 3. Bergara or TC for that matter should not sell 2nd's

I've owned a couple Traditions. Only guns I ever sold. IMHO you did well to stay away, the ones I had were poorly designed and poorly made.

Should have responded sooner........

Mike sells barrels that HE calls seconds and not what others would consider seconds. Mike's and exceptional gunsmith and knows more about Encore platform rifles than probably anyone in North America.
