Nosler Custom Brass or Loaded Ammo

I was in my local gun shop yesterday and they had 6 boxes, 25 each, of 7 STW Nosler Custom Brass. I've got 60 rounds of Nosler Custom Brass now but need some more. The problem is that the brass is priced at $70 per 25 piece box. That seemed pretty harsh.

The brass I have now was bought as loaded ammo so I checked the price on that. The four boxes they had of Nosler Custom ammo loaded with Nosler 140 gr. Partitions were $64 per box of twenty. This is the same load that I bought to get the brass I have and it's accurate. I used it to break in my barrel. The first round down range pierced an AR500 silhouette like a drill bit. I forgot about the 3000 fps rule on AR500 steel. With the 3300 fps muzzle velocity, I don't even shoot the 300 yard steel. I only shoot steel at 500 and 1000 yards.

I can get loaded ammo for almost the same price as brass, but I'm loading the Berger 180 gr. VLDs in this rifle. I'd probably just shoot the rounds at the range to get the brass. That's fun and all, but its also wear and tear on the barrel.

So, which should I buy?

The unloaded brass is 40 cents cheaper per piece. I would get the unloaded since the loaded is not your regular load.

$70 is about average price for Nosler STW brass. You're not gonna find it any cheaper anywhere else.

Personally, I'd rather pay $70 and get 25 new brass, than pay $70 for 20 rounds of ammo that MIGHT shoot, and only have 20 brass in the end...

Just my thoughts on it. I'd go for the new brass.

I just read a review of nosler brass on midways website and the fella says he builds rifles with slower twist rates than factory rifles. Anyone know who he is?

If you need a good gunsmith here in Alabama, call up Sam Stroh or Jimmy McCullough. Either of them will build a hell of a rifle that will shoot better than any person can. Jimmy built my first custom rifle when I was 16. But I was told he retired at the beginning of this year, but not 100% sure on that. You might can still coax him into building one more.

Stroh also builds a hell of a rifle. I've owned rifles built by both, and have 4 Stroh customs. I would still have a McCullough custom, but some thieving a-hole stole it...

My thought would be to get the loaded ammo. You get the benefit of fitting your brass to the chamber, plus -- Breathe, Relax, Aim, Stop, Squeeze is always good practice.

And who knows? That round MIGHT shoot, and you would have another "possibility" in your bag of tricks.
