nosler 7mm long range accubonds

I have a browning a bolt in 7mm rem mag and where I hunt here in Wisconsin I can shoot deer up to 700 yards. Also I am considering buying a rem 700 7mm rem mag (bull barrel) because I shoot my 308 1000 yards and I want to shoot farther.

Now the question is am I better off shooting the 150 or the 175 LRAB?

the drop of these 2 bullets in mils with the most accurate load of imr 4831(10mph wind)

normally heavier bullets are better at long distances or at least get better than the lighter bullets from what I've ever looked at before

So am I wrong thinking with these bullets the 150s are the better bullet or am I missing something. I am using exbal ballistic software.

Assuming that the inputs are all correct, then yes the 150 is looking better. I would make sure you verify all of the numbers though. If the velocity changes a bit or the elevation, temp, etc, that could change those numbers. Also, make sure you are using the verified BC's of the bullets and not the advertised numbers from Nosler as those appear to be incorrect.

150 ABLR @ 3,100 fps drifts 1" less than the 168 ABLR fired at 2,900 fps...at 1,000 yards....and yes my inputs are correct (Litz BC's and several different atmospheric data scenarios)...20 mph crosswind.


Its a "time of flight" thing...the VERY good BC of the 150 helps it hang on to more of that 3,100 fps...pretty simple really...the Ackley just can't push the 168 grain bullet enough faster to make use of the better BC...an STW would be a different story, but just barely.

For non-magnum 7mm rounds (280, 280 AI, 7mm-08, etc.)...the Nosler 150 grain Accubond LR is the best bullet available, by the numbers at least (very good BC and high muzzle velocity, potent combination)....it takes at least an STW to see any benefit from the heavier bullets, and even then its only beyond 1,200 yards, which is beyond the ideal hunting range of even the STW...in other words, useless except for paper punching.

In a nutshell...the 150 ABLR hit a sweet spot....light enough to shoot fast, long enough to have a high BC...similar to the 129 ABLR (6.5mm)

It seems to me that you should be able to get the 175 alot faster than that. I shoot berger 180 hybrids close to 3000. The 175 LRAB wont be as fast as the 180 hybrid because the bearing surface is a little longer on the accubond, but I am confident you will see them faster than 2700. TRy h1000 or REtumbo.

Also, dont overlook some other offerings for hunting. You can use the bonded bullets for close shots since they hold together so well and something like the 180 hybrid for longer range when the impact velocity is lower. A recent shot I took at 410 yards with a hybrid was downright impressive, bang flop on a heavy whitetail.

You are gonna love that 7mm!

My imr setup in 1/2" at 100.

I will not give up accuracy for 100 or 200fps.
 
I shoot 168 ABLR's out of my 7mmRemMag 26" 1:9 barrel at 3,128fps with 79.3gr of RL-33....super accurate

Hybrids are accurate bullets. Like every rifle I have loaded fur, there are several accuracy nodes. You just pick one at the velocity you want at an acceptable pressure. If you are happy at those velocities I see no reason to change it, but it sounded like you were looking for the best performance and that lies at the higher nodes with a different powder. If you have a 1/2 in rifle with one powder it will shoot others too.
Load workup is a hassle so if you like what you got I'd go with it. It is great performance just the way it is already.
 
I will say however that I have not killed a big game animal with the ABLR yet....a bunch of Prairie Dogs though....

Have any of you and what was the result?

I did kill a bunch of BG with regular AB's

Ridgerunner, what powder do you prefer with those 150's?
 
Haven't actually fired any yet...rifle isn't finished (any day now)...

That said, I have Norma MRP...but am keeping an eye on a couple of the new powders too (Reloder 23, IMR 7977)...

And I'm quite sure IMR 7828 ssc will be a good one too...

Thanks for the info I'll keep an eye on this thread. I walked in to McGowen yesterday and they had a 280ai barrel on the shelf for my savage. Just getting started myself.

Beside HDY ELD-X bullets, I'm considering the ABLR for a 7mm Rem Mag 26" barrel that I have on order. My only concern is a relatively slow twist rate, 1:9.5", which will, according to Bryan's test results, not stabilize even the lightest of the ABLR's (150grs).
Do you guys recommend that I should even give it a try or should I just forget about it?
QuickLoad guesstimated velocity is almost 3200 fps and I'm looking into hunting medium sized game (such as chamois in Europe) up to 1000 yds.
