Hi I'm new but have been reading around. I went to my first PRS match at a local range and I'm wanting to dive in so much its funny. Only gun I have that is even remotely capable is my savage axis 270 win. I'm considering re barreling this gun in something like 6.5x284. Is there something else I should consider or just maybe even just shoot my 270 win? again just getting going and I'm that guy who doesn't want to do what everyone else is doing and I saw so many 6.5 creedmores it kinda turned me off. Should I even consider my savage axis as a builder or just use what I have until I get my feet wet and can afford something better?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks

Heck, use what you have. You'll learn to use it better. You will see tons of 6.5 and 6 Creedmoors as they are out of the box PRS ready guns.

If you thought you going to get into the sport, I'd use money on rebarrel for something like a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6 or 6.5 creedmoor.
The reason you saw a lot of 6.5 creeds is because the round works. Good barrel life plus lots of ammo choices for the shooter that doesnt reload.

I have read about the peck and praises of a 6.5 creed low recoil good barrel life and all But what would you suggest as an alternative to the 6.5 for PRS

Thanks for all the replies.. I'm not opossed to the 6 or 6.5.. just want something that everybody and their brother doesn't have or wants.. other options I'd be open to suggestions

Other choices, 6xc, 6.5x47 Laupua, 260 Remington, 6 Dasher, 6x47 Lapua.

If wanting to go against the flow of whats working best, go with a 308.

Ok guys another question? clearly my 270 isn't well suited for prs shooting. I'm not trying to make a carreer of prs doubt I'll do it more than once a month. So I have 2 rifles I could either work at upgrading (selling/trading toward a new gun) or have a gunsmith work on them. I have a savage axis in 270 win, or a howa 1500 in 223 1:12 twist so that wont work for prs stuff. but I have both that I can trade/sell or modify. what do you all think?

You are going to want to shoot a lot. I'd opt for something in a short action; just don't need the powder column of a long action cartridge like the .270. If you want to trade one of yours to pursue your interest, I'd trade the .270; a good .223 is hard to beat for inexpensive shooting. And if you want to be different, look at the .243 Win. Gets you a 6mm that is quite capable, but not what everyone else is doing.

I'd sell/trade what you got to to get into a entry level rifle designed for the sport like the RPR or a Howa HCR. Remington will be releasing a entry level rifle soon. MSRP be around $1000

howa HCR or the savage 10ba stealth. can get the stealth right now for about $830

I'm like you and just getting into the whole thing and loving every minute of it! And what I have been reading you can get the Ruger American Predator and it's supposed to have the same barrel and trigger as the Precison rifle. But the only thing there is it has a sub par stock compared to other guns but you can change it out if you please.
