I've been doing a bit of research on the subject. You know how you think it's clean but that brass jag leaves you shaking your head in wonder? For like, 20+ years of shooting.
Now there is the whole CLR thing being debated.
My test subject is a Bartlein 223 barrel from SAC for my Desert Tech SRS. I have 600+ rounds through it and didn't go through any lengthy break in process other than a few 5 round sessions followed by cleaning using my trusty Bore Tech Eliminator with a nylon brush. I had cleaned the barrel at 300 rounds and it was time for the next one.
What spurred this was a the new Lyman Borescope that is now in my possession. I'm sure it's not as good as the higher end borescopes but for a couple hundred bucks.....I'm in.
I did 3 sessions with the Bore Tech and looking at the barrel from the inside...the first 6-8 inches of the bore revealed some discoloration which I assumed was copper.
Ordered up some of foaming Wipe Out which removed more carbon but never seemed to pull out too much copper. I did one session for an hour and another for three hours but the discoloration remained.
Another $50 brings home the KG carbon and copper remover. I figured that most if not all of the carbon had been removed so I went right to the copper remover. It did nothing, I mean nothing.
Another look and the carbon ring is almost gone but the flecks of discoloration are still there. Hmmmm.
Returned to the Bore Tech and did 3 sessions including 20 passes each session with the nylon brush which removed a bit more copper. I then took a 30 cal. brush and pushed it in far enough to reach the carbon ring and finally that had all but disappeared. There is now a very small amount of blue coming out and that is using a plastic 22 jag so I done get fooled by false readings.
I'm fairly certain that the discoloration is copper. If I insert the scope further down the bore the discoloration is not visible and at this point, this level of clean is more than likely going to be clean enough. Shoot more, clean less I suppose.
This post isn't really meant to spur some debate regarding the different products used or your favorite brand. Just wanted to express my frustration that I'm sure others have felt and warn against those darn borescopes. LOL.
Maybe someone with a top end bore scope could verify the copper remains that just seem to stay put and some discussion about when clean, is clean enough.
I have to go stick that borescope down my 6.5 creed now.
