Max range for .338 Lapua using 300gn SMK?

Plenty of energy out at 1500 to take an elk, but you need to consider bullet velocity and expansion. 1800 FPS is a good minimum velocity for most bullets but I don't know specifically how the SMK performs. Out of a .338 Lapua you'll probably hit 1800 FPS right around 900 yards.

I haven't shot my .338 lapua yet, but I've been doing some research on long range shooting.

There are a few things to think about.... spin drift, The Coriolis effect becomes an issue outside 1000yrds. From that point on you need to factor what hemisphere you are in, which direction are you shooting (east, wt, north, south).

It's a very interesting read. I'm sure you can google it, here's one link I found. Kinda cool.
