I have a 6-lug Weatherby Mark V chambered for 280 Rem that I plan to rebarrel to a more powerful cartridge. The 6-lug standard Mark V action has a smaller bolt than the 9-lug magnum Mark V. Will this prevent me from being able to safely open the boltface to accept a magnum cartridge, say a 300WSM?

I would recommend against such a tactic.

1) The barrel on a 6-Lug Mark V is only 1" vs normal 1.2"
2) The bolt will have very little to support the case head.
3) There is no extractor and you will have to make one up custom

IIWM: I would use something else.

I'm quite sure you could trade your 6-Lug for something more appropriate.
