So I'm relatively new to hunting. Got 2nd and 3rd season Colorado elk tags this year. Went scouting last week, and that led to the following questions: what are the most effective Lotions, potions, and elixirs you use to repel bugs, protect from the sun, and mask or eliminate your scent? As you know, elk have a keen sense of smell. Thanks in advance for your insights.

You have to heed the wind direction for scent. Nothing will take your scent away, despite what an ad might tell you. As for skeeters, I use repellent with Picaridin as the active ingredient. DEET (even in 30% concentrations) burns the heck out of my skin. Picaridin doesn't and it works just as well....

The only thing that I have found that even comes close is baking soda.
A non scented bag that you can seal.
Rub it on all over, use it to brush your teeth as well, arm pits, your hair, hat everything.
Keep your clothes in the bag with the baking soda, tie it up and shake. Let them stay in the bag until you get ready to use them.
Take native vegetation and rub it all over your clothes, juniper is a good one if it's in the area, pine needles, sage brush ect
You can also use the dirt in that area if it's got a lot of smell

Sawyer spray on clothing last for approximately 6 weeks, and a thermacell. You can get an ozone generator on Amazon cheap to clean your scent

Permethrin for bugs. My tent has to be treated every so often. That said, I don't really put it on my clothes. I have a little buff for face sun protection, but also helps with deer flys and such.

Merino or polyester hoodie/long sleeve for sun.

Play wind for for scent. Western hunting, it's really the only way. You're not walking out a few hundred yards to a stand at 4 am on a cool day in the shade. By the time I start hunting, and have walked any distance, my feet are starting to sweat, and every orifice is starting to smell like human. Merino wool hides body order a little better on longer days out in the field.

Has anyone here ever tried one of those ozone things??
I have used a couple different ozone machines I never thought they worked or didn't work pretty much the same result, but when I had one in my truck for the scent left in the cab of my truck and my dog jumped in the truck, he immediately smelled it so there must be some thing That the animals can smell even with ozone

I have a buddy that swears by his. From the beginning of season til the end he doesn't wash his hunting clothes but instead he puts them in a closet in his garage with an Amazon purchased ozone machine for 30 mins each time after hunting then allows them to air out until he goes to the next hunt I have no personal experience with them, I use code blue clothing wash to clean my clothing then put outside to air out.
