Well I've been researching this quite a bit and it seems a decent amount of the loads talked about on here seem to be above the recommended maximums. How many people on here actually reload above their manuals suggestions?

I have a 7mm WSM being built right now and I should be able to get it finished in 2 months or so.

With a 28" barrel do you guys think I can hit 3100 fps with a 168 gr berger?

This is the recommended max load from berger using a 24" barrel.

Have people noticed that custom actions can be loaded a lot hotter than a trued 700 action?

I can't speak for anybody else but I go over all the time. Manuals are written for the worst case. Margins are built in for poor rifle and load quality. If you work up loads , watching for pressure signs , you will often pass max loads. You will also find that often the really hot loads will not be accurate. High quality components and tight chambers can handle a little over but you may just get short brass life and poor accuracy for very little velocity gain. With good brass the first sign is usually flattened primers and loose primer pockets. Be careful and wear your glasses!

I would imagine you would be able to hit 3100fps with 168 bergers I get 180 VLD's to fly at exactly 3000fps in my 7WSM with a 27" tube using 64 grains of IMR 7828ssc which I believe is about a grain or so over max and I have absolutely no pressure signs and I am on my 6th reload with this brass. Good Luck!!!!

No matter what your source, you have to work up anyway.

I use QuickLoad, and I don't believe you'll reach 3100fps using H1000 with a 168 (even if jammed).
But there are a lot of powder choices that will get you there, and below SAAMI max.

Which ones do you think would get there? This is the data I received. I imagine I would get 15-20 fps per inch past this. With these numbers being run through a 24" barrel. Being in North Dakota I feel I must have a temperature sensitive powder to run. IE retumbo or H1000.
