I would add the ability to call wind between the first and second most important if you hunt out west and deal with a lot of wind.

To many people shot to large a caliber n flinch on every shot.
start with a .22LR n work up.
Dry fire
I loaded a light load for my new shooter loved it. I cranked it up for deer n lost a new shooter.
A few grains of powder and a few more grains of bullet
A Sibling is very slowly getting them back into shooting.

There is no substitute for shot placement. However, for me, the decision on bullet choice for the intended purpose is already made before going afield.

The "NUT" behind the trigger (who selects the right bullet for the intended purpose and responsibility for the shot placement) remains the biggest factor.
