Info needed on Savage 11 light weight hunter

I am looking for info on the Savage 11 light weight hunter in 223. I really like the 243 better but I want to start them with real low recoil. Can anyone that owns one give me a review. It is a 5.5 lb gun with 20 in barrel and wood stock. I am thinking of buying one for the grand kids. Cutting down the stock and also lopping barrel to 18 inch. It will be their first center rifle and can be pasted down through the 3 grand kids. thanks for any help...... dgarrett
