Hydrostatic shock?

With feeding hogs at 100 yards or so, an inch or two below the ear and a couple inches back towards the neck makes for a very sizable target. I'll only take that shot with a good rock solid rest. In a hurry and not as steady I shoot behind to shoulder tight to the leg on hogs. I rarely shoot deer in the head. I've seen the jaw issue to many times. That shot in the video was with my 6mm Cremator. 108 eldm. Sorry about the video quality. Humidity and condensation was rough last night.

I was considering this shot the next time I hunt pigs. I made a perfect heart/ double lung shot and the pig took off running for a couple of hundred yards. When we gutted it the heart and lungs were completely wrecked. We had to go back to were I hit it and track the blood trail. Even with a huge hole and silver dollar exit the blood trail stopped, I can only guess it ran out of blood.

I haven't seen the aforementioned presentation by Barnes; however, I discovered recently that I was using the term 'hydrostatic shock' when I (and the majority of other shooters) were really describing 'hydraulic shock'. I know the latter doesn't sound as 'cool', but it was interesting to learn that the former term is more of a theoretical concept, and the latter term an observable outcome.

I still like the term "hydrostatic stock" to describe all the things that may or may not be produced by hydraulic shock; it keeps the things we know and we are guessing about seperate.

That thick skin seals like a self sealing fuel tank.. If you can get a good solid rest. An inch or two below and an inch r two back from the ear hole puts them to sleep. And it doesn't take a cannon to do it.
Only lower hits bleed well on hogs for blood trails. Like 1/3 of the way up. But angle matters. High to low pass thru tends to leave a low exit which bleeds. High hits above half way up and level tend to seal quickly. Just my observations.
The best blood trails I've seen come from broadheads like the 4 blade Zwicky Eskimo shooting at a downward angle from a treestand around 12ft high. The exit will be very low and the hole doesn't seal very well with the right broadhead.

Yes I understand that pigs, like black bears, can seal but there was no sealing the entry or exit holes. The guide said the blood mist was like ten feet around and when we lost the pig on the first recovery attempt we went back to the impact point. Huge area of blood splatter. Lost the blood trail in tail grass about hundred yards so we split to trail it. Spotted the pig around a hundred yards latter. One guide swore my exit hole was my entry, but I and the guide that was on the hunt with me confirmed the shot and holes. Upon gutting the maybe 125 lb meat sow the impact side lung was gone and around a quarter of the exit side was left. We never found the heart. The Speer Mag Tip bullet has a flattened tip and I'm sure started expanding on impact.

Glad you recovered it. Odd that it stopped bleeding all of a sudden. But holes can plug with organ or fat also. What caliber and bullet were you using. Also Poi. Pm me that if you feel like it. I'm very interested as always. Pigs can be tough.
