I just picked up a Savage Weather Warrior in .260 Rem. It has an 8 twist barrel. My question is what hunting bullet would you use for hunting out to 500-600 yds, but in an area that would also allow shots inside of 75 yds?

Berger 140 has been my 6.5 go to bullet of death from close to far on elk for quite a while, we lit some 124 Hammer bullets and they immediately shot well so they'll get tested this year, only copper bullet I think shows excellent promise.

Ive had good results with the SST in a creedmoor in similar ranges you are looking to use your 260 for. You may give them a look.

Very interesting, I had not seen those before. Although slightly lighter than the Barnes LRX, the BC appears to be better. I'll be very interested in seeing the results of your testing.

Check out these 2 links and the site below there some really good reading about bullet performance on the site as well. The 140 VLD or AMAX are really good. The Berger 140 Hybrid is good as well. Used properly they can put your game to ground quick.

There are a lot of great bullet reviews on Midway USA as well. Stay away from bonded like the 140 NAB offerings at extended range they enter and exit small.

I have had good luck with the 120 NBT at 400 okay but not 5or600. I am going to try the 100NBT and 100 ttsx this year in the 8 twist and the T/TSX sounds interesting as well. The 127 LRX would not stabilize in my 1 in 9.

Good luck and shoot straight

I'm a huge fan of my 260. I really like the 140gr SST. I've shot coyotes as close as 30yds and as far as 300yds, pencil sized entrance quarter sized exit. A couple hogs 180-200lbs, 80-100yds, complete pass through with pencil sized entrance and quarter sized exit. As far as longer range- whitetail doe at 430yds, pencil entrance and half dollar exit. I've also used it on other pests. I like it. It does a nice job of killing what it hits, and it's super accurate, and SSTs are kind of cheap. They also have a nice BC rating. That just my personal preference.

I just killed 2 doe antelope with my 260 Ackley, high lung/lower spine hits using 140 Berger Hunting VLD, made a bullet diameter entrance with almost no bloodshot to the meat, liquefied the lungs, and left a pop can diameter exit with a small amount of bloodshot around the exit, but not as much as expected from such a large exit hole. One was 480 yards, the other was 440 yards. Both were dead before their chests hit the ground, these bullets are devastating, and in the long range game, I don't like to track. And I have a sneaking suspicion, I wont have to with this bullet.

FYI, these are moving 3,000 fps.

My go-to .260 Rem (and 6.5 SLR) bullets are the 140 Berger HVLD @ 2860fps or 2940fps, and since this year my daughter drew a tag for an area that requests the use of non-lead ammo, we worked up a killer load using the 127 LRX @ 3000fps. We will use the 127 LRX for shots out to 500. Beyond that, the 140 Bergers will get the nod.

Way back when Remington came out with the 260 in the 700 my buddy got one. You could not even get ammo for it at the time and there was no load data out yet. We treated it like a wildcat and ended up with H4350 powder cases made from Remington 243 Winchester cases, CCIBR2 primers. We used Sierra 120 gr and 140 gr soft point bullets. It was a tack driver and we were doing crop damage control in east NC. That season we killed 50 deer with that rifle using both bullets from on top of us to a little over 500 yards with no problems. 49 of the 50 deer dropped in their tracks. The one that did not only took three jumps before pilling up. So you see it does not have to be the latest wiz=bang bullet to come down the pike. If the rifle will shoot and you learn how to shoot it the 260 Rem is a deer killer. :D

How much jump do the 127 LRXs seem to like?
