excuse my Savage ignorance, but is the "3 screw target action, 4.4" main spacing" different than a couple year old 110 Short Action 4.4" main spacing action?

I suspect mine is a 2 screw (into the action) while the 3rd screw simply hold the rear of the trigger guard, right?

No the target action has the same 2 screws as a regular 4.4, but has another right in the middle of the 2, so it's for a single shot. So it actually has 4 screws in the stock.
