Heaviest .257 Hammer in 1:10 twist??

As title suggests, what is the heaviest .257 you guys are getting away with in a 1:10 twist? I just bought my Son a Black Friday deal on a savage Axis II XP, comes in 1:10, 22" barrel.

I'd like to load up some heavies for hunting, and I'll buy some light stuff for practicing.

115 grain in traditional cup/core.

100'ish in mono.

Why would you shoot 2 different weight bullets for practice and hunting? You'll just burn up more components and put more wear on your barrel.

Because he's 10 and I don't want him to develop a flinch.

This year we practiced with a lightly loaded 243 before deer season, then he killed his first with a 6.5 CM shooting 143 Hornady.

Well, no offense but 257 Wby probably wasn't the best choice, especially with a 22" barrel. The blast is going to be substantial. There is going to be little to no difference in the recoil between light and heavy. I've shot everything from 87 grain to 115 grain and there is no noticeable difference in felt recoil.

Run 92gr Hammer Hunters. That's what I am running in my 25-06. Getting close to 3500fps with .5 moa groups at a 300yds. Recoil is not bad.

I just realized I misread your original post. I did not realize you were asking about Hammers specifically. Your going to have to stick to the 90 grain or lighter Hammers in a 10 twist.
