Arizona Elk Guide sent me this epic Hammer Trail video of an incredible Bull being shot at 477 Yards with a 6.5 PRC and the 124 Hammer Hunter.

I've never seen a vapor trail like that. Looked like smoke. What causes that? Sure looks like more than heat/disruption of the atmosphere to me.

It was a common thing with the 196's I was shooting out of my .300… we were shooting some rocks at extended range a couple days before season opener… making sure our rifles survived the trip out west.

@HammerBullets I've wondered what causes this white vapor trail also. I've seen it in my 338 norma shooting 246 hammers one time doing load work at 100 yards. Then I saw it in a video of a guy shooting the 281 hammer hunter out of a 375 ruger. Cant say I've ever witnessed that from a bullet other than a hammer hunter though. Any insights??

I've read that some people claim it has something to do with the oils left over on the bullet from the machining process. Only bullet I've ever seen do that as well

Air passing over the rings, similar to jets breaking the sound barrier? The rounded edges of the rings, parabolic (?), works like an air foil maybe. Other bullets like Barnes TSX have square edge rings. Just guessing.
