First time shooting at 1k

Got to shoot 1000 yards for the first time Saturday. Man, what a rush!

An experienced shooter was kind enough to let me shoot his Savage 6.5/284 with hand-loads he has worked up for it. 10.3" group & 47/50 points (5 record rounds). Good enough to win the Factory Gun Class.

I knew that shooting that far was a completely different animal, but doing it sure is different than thinking about it. The furthest I had shot before was 600, but that was a long time ago qualifying with an M-16.

I've now crossed an item off of my bucket list, and envy you guys who get to shoot long distance regularly even more!

Yeah I know! If I hadn't just purchased an AR-15 I'd be looking at a 6BR one of the guys is selling. Might pursue it more next year.

one k is fun when you get used to that go to 2000 yards Its a rush and a half. Glad you got hooked!!!!!

You are so right! right after I had hits on the 1000 yd target, I found
that we also have a fifteen hundred Yard target. I was out of scope
adjustments, so I used the miilldots and top of the bottom post for
elevation and windage. Wow that was real fun.

I still have to shoot on a score able target at a 1000 yards to

become proficient.

One of the best and least expensive scopes for long range is the 6x24 leatherwood art scope or the M1000 if you are shooting something less than a .338 win mag. Respectively the 6 by 24 is a no math mildot system that reaches out to 1200 without adjusting for elevation and the M1000 to 1000 yards without elevation. is all you have to do is read the wind. Have fun! Snipers of my day were experimenting with trying to equal Carlos Hathcocks 2400 yard one shot kill. Unlike the modern snipers he shot no sighters after his initial ranging. Course nobody can compare to Carlos he was and still is the best in my opinion but we sure have fun trying!! personally my longest head shot was a little over 1400 yards.(I still think it was luck) I had a friend years ago that was a Marine scout sniper in the Nam that could regularly hit head shots as far away as 1200 consistently at 60 plus yrs old. I wish I could still shoot that well!! Aw well practice practice practice I hope you load your own!!! I am experimenting with a 338 win mag I feel confident that it will be a 2000 yard shooter when I finally get my new mounts made. By the way I make custom windage adjustable mounts (weaver style) adjustable to 40 moa or so either way if you ever have trouble with badly drilled scope mounts.

I'm planning on starting to reload soon. Even 5.56mm isn't cheap anymore ;-)
