Distance between Objective and barrel???

What should the max distance be between the objective lens and the barrel of the rifle. I think my rings may be too high, for I've got a measurement of roughly 3/8", but under 1/2 for sure. How much would this affect accuracy??

Any ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't believe this directly effects accuracy... your resting/comfortable eye position may require some adjustment on the cheekpiece though. HOlding your head out of a comfortable position to see through the scope generally does not help in the marksmanship department. This does sound a little high...

I don't like them too close either... I like to leave enough room for small stuff to pass between the barrel and objective bell without getting stuck... briars, clumps of leaves, weeds, low flying geese, etc..
