Dialing questions!!!

Ok folks i plan to keep using my range finder. Have a nice leica unit that I really like. Don't plan to buy range finding binoculars. And I want to be able to dial for distance slash elevation. So what difference does it make if I use a second or first vocal plane scope? As long as it's a good quality instrument capable of being dialed accurately. I can't see that it would matter but i may be missing something here. Anyone?

The dialing is exactly the same, no difference there. Wind holds and accurately making corrections based off impacts are where the advantage goes to FFP. Both can still be done with SFP it just isn't as fast/easy as FFP (generally speaking).

No difference in dialing for elevation and windage. Only difference would be doing hold overs for elevation and windage on the second focal plane if you have hash marks in your reticle. Then it needs to be set at the factory specified magnification (usually max) for the marks to be accurate when holding over. Otherwise dialing is the same for ffp or sfp

FFP is like a heat seeking missile. You will never miss.

SFP might send the bullet behind you or any direction when fired. Chance of hitting the target is .0001% chance.

Normally people dial for elevation and hold for wind. Holding for wind with the SFP scope is a math problem you have to do in your head unless you're at maximum magnification. Depending on the sub tensions and magnification that might be an easier problem, but FFP makes it point and shoot.

I see. I guess I should have stated that I was interested in a hunting situation not target shooting.

I see. I guess I should have stated that I was interested in a hunting situation not target shooting.

Hunting is probably where it's most useful, a mil based FFP (with a good reticle) is the fastest way to put an accurate shot down range when seconds count.

I prefer hashmarks in tenths of Mil, especially for wind hold. I also prefer a dot for my aiming mark in general. With a FFP scope, this gets larger as magnification is increased, for me, this is good.

Did you mean to say second focal is not good for dialing? And yes I've used the Boone &Crockett reticle for years but I'm afraid to try moving / dialing with their turrets. Its a 3-18 x50 original vx6.

Yes, I am saying SFP is not great for dialling due to sub-tension parameters, if the magnification is not set for the parameter set at the factory, it can be off quite a bit.

Agreed. Assuming that wind isn't a factor. I plan to only use the center of the reticle when dialing. Wouldn't this work well with a second focal plane set up ? Im Assuming you say to use the windage hash marks to hold for your wind hold rather than dialing for wind when using first focal?

Dialing wind is pretty tough while hunting. I can maybe see it on a bedded animal but it's adding a little time and you better have a real steady wind. I'm not a SFP hater, on scopes that top out at about 10x I somewhat prefer it because i can pretty much run the top end in just about any situation that I'm going to be in and have accurate sub tensions while not giving up the very bottom end in thick timber. But the advantages on higher mag scopes are pretty undeniable where your spending a lot of time in that mid zoom range. Doing the math on a Sfp 25x max scope set at 14x isn't something i wanna do if I need to be fast.

Agreed. I usually keep it on a suitable power that's based on terrain and hunting technique in use at the time. It always depends on distance and wind conditions. Also wind dialng is only accurate at the preset factory setting usually highest power. and half of high power takes twice the clicks for the same wind? Correct? Guess I'm gonna need one of those ballistic app firing solutions machines? Suggestions.
