What year of gun? Up to 1967 they could be put anywhere legally, and some don't
have any. I have a few guns that have the numbers on the barrel. Brownings specifically.
I don't know what winchesters practices were when your gun was built. From a quick
read it should be where you looked under the receiver. If you have a vet or dentist that
can x ray it for you an old stamping will still show up in the metal if it was buffed off.
Pipeline inspection companies could be even better.
