Need to have factory ammo readily available.
Honestly for what he wants to do and the species of bear involved I'd probably opt even for a plain vanilla .270 Winchester. Little more sensible for pronghorn than an equivalently flat shooting 30 cal, enough for black bear.
 
How about a .308? Load it up for the bear and down for the pronghorn. Lots of factory ammo around. Worth thinking about.

Just to be clear.....I'm past middle age(for the most part)heck...I guess if it ends tomorrow I lived til I died)....full lifespan)..
Stupid......well...I can carry that right thru the bones........
