Please explain the why of this or your theories!

Spent the day with my buddy shooting out to 1020. All his targets are hardened plate steel. I have hand loaded a 199 HH going 3040fps from my 300PRC. (24'') We shot the factory ELD-X 212 side by side to establish drops, actual long range accuracy and energy. Both shot under MOA. 9'' group from the hammers at 1,020. Cool!

The "issue" is the copper were hardly audible and left half the mark and the lead filled ELD-X. At 600 yards it was like a slap in the face how "hard" the hornady impact sounded. I know the energies were at the very least similar but my OCD is really wondering what will be the best choice for my elk hunt. I doubt I'll be shooting really long range but hey who knows what happens. And the wind is a real thing too.

Anyway, should I just stop obsessing (what we do best here) or can someone put this to rest for me? I just expected the copper to make a divot let alone a pitiful ping!

First photo is the hammers. Second the Hornady's shot the two together then adjusted up as shown by the green arrow. 1020 yards.

Thanks guys.
