Cds ?

It's probably already been discussed here, but is Leupolds CDS system worth the bother?

Compared to what?

I have it on a couple of rifles, and both shot well to 501 yards when I had them out 2 weeks ago. That's as far as I can shoot here in MI, but I have no doubt that they'd stay accurate out further. I have found them to work just as well as anyone else's turret with the exception of not having a zero stop. However, not everyone else's does either.

I have not sent my turrets in to be engraved yet, but instead use tapes from customturretsystems.com which are easily changed.

Thanks Dr. Vette. Compared to NOT having a compensating system and either using a dial adjustment or Kentucky style. I have done both and found Kentucky works best as I forgot to mark my elevation dial

My SIL and I both have a VX-R 4x-12x scope with the CDS system on 308Win rifles and Heath (the SIL) has sent for his engraved turret cap and he has shot a 12" gong at 200, 400, and 600 yds hitting the gong on the first shot with ease. He would like to shoot further but his Leupy runs out of verticle adjustment. I recommended a 20MOA base but I don't know if he will do that or not. I have a Vortex Viper HSLR 4-16X44 on my 270Win that has the CDS (or whatever Vortex name is for it) but it has .5MOA verticle adjustements instead of the .25MOA that Leupold uses in the VXR, which will give me the extended range. That is if I ever get the info sent in for the custom caps. To make it more concise, they work!

I have a vx-6 with cds dials. Works great. range and dial its quick and dead nuts accurate

now it is very important that you send the most accurate information to leupold when you order your dials. They will be as accurate as the information you send them. I used a kestrel with AB for most of the information. Sight height above the bore is another very important measurement.

If you hunt out west where there are lots of severe elevation changes that could be a problem.

This is why I use the tapes. I live in Michigan, hunt here as well as out west. For the price of 1 turret I can have several sets of tapes and swap if/when needed. I just had a few made for my upcoming WY antelope hunt. So far they are all right on the money - assuming I send in the right info, as indicated above.

FYI, the wind will mess you up far more than a click or even two on your elevation.

I was going to say the same thing. Or if you are from the Midwest, get your custom dials, but go on a hunt out west right?

I think we could come up with a lot of scenarios where the CDS turrets wouldn't work. They would probably work in most scenarios for most hunters though.

Yep, live in Kansas, shots pretty well limited to 600 yards, either by sight line, safety reason, or property lines. So going west will give me new challenges

I have VX6 with CDS and shoots exactly at the elevation selected on the dial. As stated above, it is only as good as the input provided to Leupold when creating the CDS dope.

This solves all those problems

It works well out to moderate range in my opinion, once you start factoring in elevation, temperature, and pressure swings out at extreme range they fall out of minute of deer/elk accuracy.

however, for most hunters, general purpose range 0-700 yards I have found them to work excellent.

Check out the g7 above. It takes into account all those variable
