I am pro Pelican. However for my 338 Lapua (52 3/8") I went with the above. Reason being, the 1770 is a huge case. 8 lbs +/- heavier and about 250$ more. I have no complaints with the Plano. Have flown once, soon to be twice, with it.

Cabela's sold a Boyt brand case under 100 bucks, 95% Pelican quality and easier to open. It may have been limited to 50" inside dimensions.

I have a couple of the boyt cases, I am not a fan of them. They don't close and seal as well as they should.

I recently got a pelican V700, so far I like it. Time will tell.

I have several old school pelicans and they work great.

I have not tried the harbor freight cases yet, but I intend to.


I have tried soft cases and I am not a fan. I like being able to stack hard cases in the back of the truck, not worry about the dog jumping all over stuff in the back, not worry about stuff chaffing the rifle going down rough roads.

Here are some pics of my Americase AlumaTrans. I said it was a double rifle but I'm thinking it is their single rifle. Like I said, I've had it for 20 years. Its seen many truck beds and handful of multi leg flights.

I chose the Americase for all of the security benefits and its capacity to carry a shotgun and rifle, because TX deer season is so long I need to be able to shoot quail and pheasant on some deer hunt trips. I've had 2 scoped rifles in it several times and they do not move even when tossed by baggage handlers.

I will add that if "waterproof" was a concern, I would look closely at Pelican.

So the $64000 dollar question is... How long is your rifle overall?

I have the Plano Double Gun for my MSR-10 Long Range and it is fantastic!


Grabbed another for my 110 EP and is was way short! That rifle set-up for me is just shy of 57" long with the brake attached. I only had two options... The monster SBK (I forget the model number) and the Explorer Cases .50 Caliber Rifle Case 15416 X-Long (Internal dimensions: 60 3/5" x 14 9/10" x 6 3/10"). I have a wee bit of room left and I am beginning to see where folding butt stocks come into play!


Love both cases BTW and I would put them up against a Pelican any day...

28" barrel + Defensive Edge break + Mark v action + McMillan adj game warden stock

A buddy of mine just got a 6.5 PRC, 26" barrel in a christisen arms comes in at 47", so I am guessing mine will be aprox 50"

I may need to look into those as well - just measured my 338 RUM and with a 30" barrel + 5 port muscle break, my OAL comes out to 52 3/8".

Stupid question, but for the Explorer cases, are they available in the states?

Not sure best place to post, but looking for suggestions on a gun case that has it that I can cut the foam out for a perfect fit. Rifle has a 28" barrel and a break.

If you'd like a suggestion to cut them out....buy an electric fish filleting knife....they do an excellent job!
