I've been reloading for 55+ years, every once in awhile you do something that makes you think "idiot, why did you do that?"

Yesterday I was annealing some 6BR brass with my AMP. I have accidentally annealed cases with live primers in the past without an issue. I make an effort not to that, but it has happened. I cringe every time one slips thru.

Well so this time, when I dropped the case in the tray with previously annealed cases it must have laid against a hot neck, BOOM!

Felt a sting in my chest, ouch. Had to use twisters to remove the blown primer.

So I get to wear the idiot cap for awhile, at least til it heals up.

Always have glasses on and would never intentionally have live primers, just missed this one. This post is just to let everyone know how fast things can happen.

I get mistakes happen but I'm really not sure how you get in a position where you accidentally anneal a primed piece of brass.
The first step in brass prep knocks the primer out. (unless you clean first).
I'm surprised there was enough pressure to launch the primer out with that much speed, I'm guessing that pocket is very loose.

I clean first, anneal, then size. This apparently was a case I pulled and didn't knock the primer out.

Don't think the pocket was loose. Primers have a lot more power than we realize.

I certainly learned a good lesson.

My goal here is not to acknowledge my stupid move, but to help others to not make the same mistake.

I anneal so seldom I forgot my order of operations. DOH.

We all make mistakes, good for you in sharing to remind everyone.

Not telling you what to do at all, but you may want to get a cheap decapper and make that your first step, even before cleaning. Glad everything went as good as it did.

That is what I do, remove primers as my first step.
