Bolt Binding

As most know, the more recent Remington Model 700's have and "anti-bind" feature built into the bolt and reciever. I have an old 721 that I want to use for a 300 H&H build but the bolt has a tendency to bind a bit on the extraction stroke about an inch from the full forward position. I plan on using a PTG bolt and I was wondering if using a bolt with with minimal clearances to the receiver would help alleviate the binding issue. As usual, thanks for the help.

The first thing I would try would be to use a "Little" dry grafite (To much will make a mess).

If you do decide to go with a new bolt you need to mic. the action bolt bore (This is not easy
and should be done several times to make sure you have the correct dimensions.

I made a step manderal starting with a 1''x .997 dia. and going up .001 larger until I reached
.701. it will measure the tightest spot if not perfically round and when it fits tight or wont
go in the action I know what the bore diameter is, then I can grind the bolt .002 Minimum to
.0035 Maximum smaller.

Thanks JE for the advice. It turns out that using a bolt with minimal clearances does alleviate the binding. In a short conversation with a friend of mine about this, he mentioned that he had a PTG bolt for a Remington 700. To my knowledge, the early 700's(pre anti-bind) and 721's were basically the same except for a few cosmetic differences. I measured my bolt and it actually had a slight taper, .693" in the rear and .695 in the front. The PTG Bolt measured .700" exactly. He was gracious enough to let me stick the new bolt in my 721 and give it a few vicious dry cycles. TADA! It ran slicker than a honeymoon erection! I hope this helps anyone that ever runs into this problem.

Great !!

With the bolt being tapered no wonder it was binding.

When/if you buy a bolt from them tell them what size you want and they will grind it to that dimension.

Be sure and check your head space with the new bolt. You can buy a head space Gage from them
at the same time. You can use the GO Gage and place shims between the bolt and head space Gage
until it won,t close and then measure the thickness of the shims for the head space. Note; do not force the bolt closed just normal pressure on the bolt handle.

Also you need to remove the ejector to get a good reading. Leave the extractor to extract the Gage.
