Blackhorn 209

For as often as I shoot my Muzzleloader I have no issue with using BH209 due to cost. Also the time savings of cleaning and advanced MV is worth it to me. Just like primers and most everything else it's gone up significantly. I converted my 2 CVA LRX models to the Arrowhead breech plug and primer modules and couldn't be happier with the performance of them. My older CVA Acura MRX with the Arrowhead conversion I was getting 2250FPS from the 26" barrel and I'm expecting to be around the 2350-2375 area with the LRX models and the 30" barrel. I got those 2 CVA Acura LRX models at a rural CalRanch store on clearance for $269 each.

However, prior to Hodgdon, it was always sold in 10oz bottles by Western.

Yes and I still have a few of those 10 ounce bottles that I bought at Walmart for $39 each.

I follow this same line of thinking. If I spent a significant amount of time shooting my ML's, I would probably feel differently. I still have a half canister of a 10 oz I bought a few years ago. I whined and kicked the floor when I pulled out my wallet on a 8 oz about a year ago. I still haven't opened it.

Now I'll start checking all the small town WalMarts again as I travel around the state for work!! lol. Some of the best deals I get are while traveling and stopping in some small town LGS and WalMarts. I bought 5 boxes of 7WSM ammo last year that was priced at $19.99 a box at a little GS in rural Az, guy told me if I bought all 5 I could have them for %10 off. Same ammo I see for sale at $79 a box when it comes available.

Back when Blackhorn came out,I had read about it,but couldn't find any. The place I worked at was working on a project in Nebraska and I was talking to the project manager, he told me Cabelas had a bunch of it, so I asked him to pick me up a jug. The next week I had to go to Cincinnati for some training. After class I decided to stop at the Bass Pro shop,and behold,there was some jugs of Blackhorn. I decided to pick up a couple. Meanwhile I had been telling the lgs what good stuff it was and told them to order some in. So I get home from Cincinnati Friday and stop in at the lgs Saturday. They had gotten some in and I felt obligated to buy a couple. Monday our project manager stopped by my desk and left me a jug.

The next weekend I got a chance to try it out. Results were impressive. I was happy that I had 5 jugs. Two years later,I switched jobs,then a few years later retired and bought a smaller house. Due to time constraints I put a bunch of stuff in storage,my powder and reloading stuff was at the back of the storage unit and I had to buy a jug of Blackhorn to ML hunt that year.

I now wish I had stocked up like @ENCORE did.

I sold all our ML rifles and components a few years ago. We had a "Primitive Hunting Season" with ML Black Powder. Then Shooters not hunters had to switch ML Black Powder to Inline with 209 primers and Rifle Powders. Was no longer Primitive Weapon Season.

I used 777 Pellets with SST Bullets in our TC and could hit Beer cans at 100 yds.
Shot plenty of deer with one shot DRT
Does Blackhorn Kill deer better?

I sold all our ML rifles and components a few years ago. We had a "Primitive Hunting Season" with ML Black Powder. Then Shooters not hunters had to switch ML Black Powder to Inline with 209 primers and Rifle Powders. Was no longer Primitive Weapon Season.

I used 777 Pellets with SST Bullets in our TC and could hit Beer cans at 100 yds.
Shot plenty of deer with one shot DRT
Does Blackhorn Kill deer better?

For me it is with hunting out west at longer distances. I shoot mine out to 300 with accuracy and ease. 280 Grain 45 caliber going 2350 fps and very accurate. Shot my Coues buck 2 years ago at 307 yards.

Way back when we had the minor shortage, IIRC the Sandy Hook incident, I gave out recommendations everywhere to stock up. I did and I'm running low now.
I shoot competition and will burn up over 12,000grs in just two days of shooting at Camp Atterbury, plus another 4,200grs+ at Friendship in just a day or two, and yes, it's expensive. Just about $5 every time you touch the trigger.

Other than the obvious minor drawbacks with T7, for most hunters, and out to around 200yds, T7 can come very close to T7.

However, BH209 shines at long range. I don't know of a modern inline competitor that doesn't shoot BH209 in registered competitions. Competition today means you need to shoot through the opening under the tab on a beer can and not touch the sides at 500yds. Yes, its that tough!

Every competitor at Camp Atterbury shooting a modern inline to 1,000yds is also using BH209, and of course weighed.

I guess I am being taught a lesson. Didn't know that it has changed into competition.
I look at Primitive Weapons as "Primitive" Then it has changed to ML being as good as (or better) than modern Firearms.
