I was wondering if anyone knows what a average minimum velocity berger vld bullets need to expand reliably. I know most bullet manufactures say they recommend 1800 to 2200 fps to expand. I know bergers are supposed to work a little differently than most hunting bullets.

I can help you out.

I got an e-mail from Walt Berger, where he wrote that for full and complete expansion you should have minimum 1800 fps, so that is what have used allways.

I asked about 30 cal, but I guess for any cal berger bullet I would not go lower.

I also got an email from Walt, specifically for the 168, 175 and 185 30 cal bullets.

Hi Mark,
Adequate expansion is achieved above 1825 fps.

Hello Walt,

I was wondering if you could provide me with the minimum performance velocities of the 30 cal 168, 175 and 185 VLD bullets for expansion on game.

Thanks,

Mark

I let a 115 VLD in 6mm impact an antelope at 1880fps and it worked great.

I think Walt knows what he is talking about and he makes great bullets.
